Reveille
by Rachel Wall Dickerson

After attending several adoptions and learning more about the wild horse program I concluded that I would like to adopt a wild mustang. I found out about Steve Mantle's training program and decided to travel from Texas to Wyoming to attend his three day clinic and hopefully find a mustang to bring home. During the clinic there was one horse that caught my eye, a young bay gelding gathered from Black Rock West, Nevada. At the end of the clinic I adopted the mustang gelding that I named Reveille and was officially a horse owner for the first time! Training and finishing him myself was something that many people told me was not possible because he was a wild horse and I was only fifteen years old. To be honest he never offered to buck or kick when I started riding him.

Now 8 years later Reveille has had a few accomplishments such as winning the Green Broke High Point Buckle in 2002 at the Wild Horse & Burro Expo, taught many kids how to ride and has been an ambassador at a local adoption.

It is hard to think back to him being wild as he stands still to be body clipped, loves being blanketed in the winter and of course his infamous talent to turn his rear to me for a good scratching. The bond that we share is something that I cannot describe, but only as being something special.
